FAQ

How long are lessons?

Lessons are offered in 40 and 60 minute increments. Other lesson lengths (longer or short) may be suggested at teacher’s discretion.

Attendance:

Lessons will be scheduled at the beginning of each month. Lessons cancelled with less than 24-hour’s notice (for reasons other than illness) cannot be rescheduled and will not be refunded.

Practicing:

Consistent practicing is required. When a student commits to piano lessons with Catherine Grace it is understood that he/she is willing to create time for regular practice. Catherine Grace will work with your child to determine a weekly practice goal and minimum daily practice time.

Do I need a piano at home?

Yes! Students must have access to a piano for lessons and for daily practice. Having the right instrument to learn on is just as important as having the right teacher. While acoustic pianos are usually best, a quality electric keyboard is also acceptable for beginners.

Which electric keyboard should I get?

If your child is serious about learning piano, make sure you purchase a keyboard with:

    • 88 Keys
    • Keys with weighted action (very important for technique development)
    • An adjustable stand + bench
    • A sustaining pedal

Catherine Grace highly recommends the Yamaha P71 Digital Piano for beginner and intermediate students.

When can my child begin taking lessons?

Every child is different, but generally children are ready to begin traditional private piano lessons between 5 and 6 years old.

My preschool age child seems interested in music and playing the piano. Is it possible he/she is ready for lessons?

Some children are ready for private lessons as early as 3. Preschool students will be considered on a case by case basis. These music classes look a bit different than traditional piano lessons and are focused on building foundational music skills and music appreciation through targeted listening and age appropriate study.

Do you offer lessons for adults?

Yes, yes and yes! Catherine Grace has been working with adults for many years and absolutely loves it. Whether you took lessons as a child or have always wanted to learn to play the piano, she would be more than happy to work with you to help you achieve your goals.
